Edvard Munch (1863 to 1944) is known for one painting, and this is not the place to come for it. What is here is the rest of his work: the gardens, the snow, the shoreline at Åsgårdstrand, a cabbage field, clothes on a line.
He painted the same Norwegian coast for decades and never quite settled it. The colour runs hotter than the subject asks for and the brush keeps moving, so a quiet scene stays slightly unquiet, which is the thing worth hanging on a wall.
