Most of it is Art Nouveau decoration, and most of that is Maurice Pillard Verneuil, who spent the 1890s turning animals and plants into pattern: eagles in oak, pheasants among foxgloves, deer between trees, coral and madrepores, monkshood, nasturtium. These were drawn as designs for wallpaper and textiles rather than as pictures, which is why they sit so flat and so well on a wall. Pierre-Joseph Redouté’s roses are here too, from a century earlier and still the plate every botanical plate is measured against.
The rest is Brittany. Paul Gauguin painted at Le Pouldu before he ever saw the Pacific, and those landscapes are here alongside farm and field scenes from the same coast.
